In 1995 I was working as a foundation contractor and had invested a substantial amount of money to buy a heavy duty deck trailer and the form boards that are kept on it for transportation. I chose the bulldog trailer hitch coupler for my trailer because I believed it was the strongest and easiest to use of the trailer couplers available. Because of the nature of my business it was necessary for me to leave the trailer unattended at different jobsites. I felt very uncomfortable leaving it behind because it was a known fact that trailers were sometimes stolen. If the trailer was stolen I would not only loose the trailer and it contents but much more importantly I would loose my livelihood until I replaced the trailer and it's contents. I believed the best and easiest insurance would be to put a lock on the trailer hitch coupler.

I searched for a trailer lock that I thought would be tamper-proof and could not find one. The only locks I found had a padlock exposed which could be easily removed with bolt cutters, or had a keyed mechanism that could be destroyed or jimmied. I was determined to have the best trailer lock possible on my trailers so I decided to design my own.

I thought the best possible way to secure the trailer hitch would be to enclose it in a box with a locking system similar to those used for bank vault doors. Through trial and error I finally came up with the lock box shown here on my web -site. I applied for patent rights to my trailer lock in 1999 and received the patent for it in June of 2000. Today I have a large fleet of these trailers and each one has my lock that goes everywhere it goes.
